Choosing the best type of garage door for personal use can be challenging. Currently, there are five main types of garage doors and each has pros and cons. If you are considering a new residential garage door, it is important to look at these advantages and drawbacks. This article will provide information on the pros and cons of the different residential garage doors.

1: The Side Hinged Garage Door

A side hinged garage door is a simple solution if you want to use the area as a workshop or storage space. The door is typically installed in pairs, so you can keep a single door open when working in the garage. The operating mechanism is simple and there is minimal maintenance (all you need to do is deal with the door and hinges). It is also easy to open and close manually.

Unlike most garage doors, the side-hinged door does not work well with automatic openers. It is also considered the least secure type of garage door.

2: The Sectional Garage Door

Sectional garage doors are available in a plethora of designs and finishes, including the installation of windows in the door. It is quiet when used and operates with an automatic garage opener. Furthermore, a car can be parked close to the door without impeding the open/close operation.

Sectional garage doors are highly beneficial, but the one drawback involves space. A sectional door requires horizontal tracks to open and close which can take up ceiling space.

3: The Roller Garage Door

Roller garage doors are the most space-saving type of garage doors and are quiet when in use. There is no swing-out door in this style, so a car can be parked closely to the door without influencing operation. Roller doors are extremely secure and can be used with automatic openers. In most cases, this garage door is insulated with beneficial thermal qualities.

Despite having many advantages, the roller garage door does have its setbacks. Firstly, the door designs available are limited because the construction requires horizontal formats. Roller doors can also be costly when compared to other door styles.

4: The Retractable Up-And-Over Doors

The retractable up-and-over garage door is arguably the quietest of all garage door designs. It is simple to open and close without an opener.

Unfortunately, this type of door has complicated mechanisms which can result in damage to cars. It also uses far more internal and external space than the other doors mentioned.
